History
The second owner was a builder in the valley who purchased the truck used in 1997 with 41k miles.
He kept pretty meticulous records and I have pieced together the following history.
(There's more, but I didn't list every oil change.)

Winter 2022 |
Head gasket went out at cylinder #6 (a weakness of these engines) and the engine
overheated. I bought it from my friend. |

I did a lot of work on the top end of the engine. Details are below

Top End Work
- Replaced head gaskets, using studs instead of head bolts.
- Left (drivers) head was milled. Right head was cracked and had to be replaced.
- New exhaust manifolds.
- New timing belt tensioner.
- New accessory belts. I did not replace the timing belt as it only had ~2k miles.
- Had fuel injectors cleaned by LC Engineering
- New timing chain tensioner. Old one was out of spec.
- Replaced the knock sensor. This is very hard to get to, and the old one looked original and brittle
so it was safest to replace it.
- Adjusted valves. All are within spec now. 6 of 12 were out of adjustment.
- After completing the repairs, I ran oil with one quart of Marvel Mystery Oil for < 100 miles. I then
replaced the oil again with a new filter. I figure this is a good way to flush the engine after
it has been open.
- I've driven it up to Loup Loup and Washington Pass to make sure it was running well.
- After completing the work, the valve cover gaskets both leaked some oil so I replaced them and the
PCV valve in case the old one was clogged. Both valve cover gaskets are tight now.
Some photos showing the work
Overheating in cylinder #6 can be a weak point in the 3VZE engine. The head gasket was
blown at this cylinder and coolant had steam-cleaned the #6 piston. |
|
Making progress: down to the block, new head gasket, new heads, manifolds and valve
covers installed. |
|
I tapped the head bolt holes in the block, the spark plug holes in the heads, and ran
all the cam bolts through a die to clean them. |
|
Instead of using head bolts, I installed ARP head studs. LC Engineering claims they will
"Cure that
head gasket problem on your 3VZ once and for all!"
|
 |
When I first started to work on removing the heads, I discovered that a mounting bracket
had broken off the air filter box. This had allowed the bracket containing a number of
vacuum lines to fall into the alternator belt. I replaced the airbox top with a used one
that had a good bracket and replaced all the vacuum lines. I tested for vacuum leaks
throughout the engine by spraying carb-cleaner and fixed the two I found. |
 |
The fuel injectors were pretty filthy when I took them out and the o-rings and cups were
very brittle. I sent them off to LC Engineering to have them cleaned. |
|
I replaced the timing belt tensioner. The old one was out of spec and they are hard to
reset to reinstall. |
|
There were a few odd loose and missing bolts that I replaced. 3 of the 4 bolts that
mount the rear of the transmission to the frame were missing and the 4th was half way
backed out. E&M tapped the holes and installed new bolts. Two of the bolts mounting the
bellhousing to the block were partly backed out, so I torqued them back in. |
|
Completed engine. I had to (re)replace the valve cover gaskets to fix oil leak. |
